Community Organizer/Advocate & Promoter of Salvadoran Culture
Born and raised in San Francisco's Mission district daughter of Salvador immigrants
at age 13 worked as an art teacher for kids at Jamestown community center
studied architectural interiors at city college (AA degree) consumer and family studies at San Francisco state university (BA degree)
Volunteer work:
1980's
Cable Program, Interview with Latin America: computer grafics & television camera operator, co-taught pc use and programs to Salvadoran women refugees from El Salvador
1990's
Proyecto Miramundo: fundraised with a group of women, to implement various projects in El Salvador including a small library in Arcatao, a chicken coop in la Libertad and yearly Christmas donations for Father Lopez's orphanage in San Marcos.
2008-2009
Casa Shafick: With my mother, sister and good friend, opened a cultural/political space for Salvadorans to meet on sundays to celebrate new changes in El Salvador. Casa Shafick will reopen in the Summer of 2013.
2009-present
Luna's Press: Co owner of a small press where we produce and print poetry chaps books.
2010-present
Talleres de Poesía: Fundraising and event coordinator for this annual festival in El Salvador. 3 to 4 children's book authors together with authors residing in El Salvador hold a series a poetry and writing workshops for 3 days. Children from rural areas of all Salvador attend this wonderful and inspiring event.
"Talleres de Poesía" also organize poetry events in San Francisco as well as bay area tours for international authors.
Aside from the volunteer work I am passionate about, I have been working in the publishing field in all aspects of production for 20 years.
